the flowers of davao
Shopaholic April 10th, 2007
Of all the provinces in the Philippines, Davao is the most famous for having the most beautiful and rare orchids. Nestled at the foot of Mt. Apo, the orchid farms breed the most quaint and exotic orchids, including the waling-waling, or vanda sanderiana. This orchid is considered the most beautiful of all, surpassing the grandeflora, or the large vanda of the Philippines, found mostly in Palawan.
In the 1960’s, the flowers of Davao became so well-known many foreigners bought their own plants. The Philippine laws of export at the time did not prohibit tourists from taking with them bought plants, as long as it passes through the Department of Agriculture’s exit processing system. These plants formed later the bases of many orchid cross-breeds, including those of Thailand’s Queen Sirikit breeds, which became likewise world-famous as very beautiful flowers. Â
Today, Davao’s orchid farms supply the beauties for weddings, conference decor, and other events where orchids take centerstage. Much of the farms’ produce are sent to Manila and abroad as cutflowers, and Davao has thus become a pillar of the Philippine cutflower industry.
If you want to see the most admirable orchids of the Philippines and maybe the world, go to Davao. The Davaoenos will gladly take you on a tour through a dreamland of flowers where beauty is both permanent and ethereal.
